Addis Ababa Railway Project

We played a pivotal role in installing DC traction substations at five sites as part of the Addis Ababa LRT project. Our scope of work included setting up a Traction Power Substation (TPSS), responsible for converting AC power from the utility into DC power for the LRT system. The key components involved in this installation were as follows:
  • AC power feeds from the utility service provider with an auto-transfer system
  • AC switchgear
  • Traction power transformer and rectifier unit
  • DC switchgear
  • Positive and Negative disconnect switch
  • Negative ground switch
The Traction Power Distribution System (TPDS) establishes the connection between the positive circuit of the substations to the Overhead Catenary System (OCS) and the negative circuit to the rails. The rail tracks are interconnected using double and triple copper jumpers. To accomplish this, we employed a specialized welding method known as exothermic welding to seamlessly connect the cable to the rail.
